Students on the Frontline to End Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

FGM

It’s important we can learn, so we can prevent it from happening to other people.
— Secondary student Waltham Forest, London, UK

As FGM became a compulsory school subject in England and Wales, SafeHands and anti-FGM activist and SafeHands Ambassador, Hibo Wardere, supported primary and secondary teachers and students in Waltham Forest, East London to address FGM in the classroom. Inspired by Hibo’s frank and honest approach, students understand FGM as a form of abuse and are encouraged to stand up and take action against FGM in their community.

Students on the Frontline to End FGM was produced by Nancy Durrell McKenna, award-wining photographer and filmmaker and SafeHands' Founder Director, as part of our project 'End FGM Now: Teachers on the Frontline.' The project is implemented by anti-FGM activist, Hibo Wardere, and educator, Carol Moloney.

If you suspect someone is at risk or being subjected to any form of FGM, it is important to take action and report it straight away. In the UK, if someone is in immediate danger please dial 999. If you are concerned about a child, please call the NSPCC on 0800 028 3550 or email fgmhelp@nspcc.org.uk. Domestic violence support is also available on Freephone National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge on 0808 2000 247.
