What is FGM?

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. More than 200 million women and girls in 30 countries have experienced FGM, with three million undergoing FGM every year. FGM can cause life-threatening immediate and long-term complications including haemorrhage, infections, and psychological, menstrual, urinary, and sexual problems.

SafeHands is proud to work with anti-FGM campaigner and survivor, Hibo Wardere. Hibo trains students, school administration, and police how to identify girls at risk of being cut and how to intervene. You can find more about her work and contact her on Twitter @HiboWardere.
