OUR
STORY

Simply SafeHands.

Founded in 2003 by award winning photographer and filmmaker Nancy Durrell McKenna, under the name SafeHands for Mothers. Her mission was to harness the power of photography and film to ensure every pregnancy and childbirth was safe.

But to do that means addressing broader issues like contraception, bodily autonomy and social power. Women and girls must have access to SRHR information and services to make full, free and informed choices over their bodies and lives without fear or discrimination.

Our work started with maternal health but now extends beyond that and so must our name. That is why we are now simply SafeHands.

Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)

On 1 June 2020, our Charitable Status changed. From 2003, we were registered as SafeHands for Mothers Charitable Trust 1097928.  In 2019 – 2020, we began making changes to our governance structure. Our application to the Charity Commission of England and Wales to convert our governance structure to a new legal entity of Charitable Incorporated Status (CIO) was approved in November 2019. From 1 June 2020, we began implementing under our new CIO structure - SafeHands (Charity Number 1186460). Although our charitable status has changed, our organisation maintains the same charitable objects and strategic focus.
